Training of Trainers on Digital and Physical Safety of Journalists ends successfully in Dhaka, Bangladesh
A three-day Training of Trainers (ToT) programme on ‘Digital and Physical Safety of Journalists’ concluded in Dhaka on 29 September 2020. News Network organised the training with support from the Internews in order to make a pool of journalists trained in both digital and physical security and mitigating the challenges.
A total of 15 journalists, including three females, representing various national and regional print and electronic media attended the 3-day residential programme held at CCDB-Hope Foundation at Savar in Dhaka. Mainuddin Ahmed, Country Representative, Internews -Bangladesh attended the opening session on 27 September 2020. The trainees learned about digital threats and risks, mitigation strategies, and security best practices that can be used to improve a user’s digital hygiene and overall digital security.

Digital security and IT expert Ashraful Haque conducted/facilitated the technical sessions of digital security while News Editor of The Dality Samakal – online version Goutam Mondal conducted the sessions on physical security.
Capacity Building Training for Human Rights Defenders at Lalmonirhat to protect Women’s and Girls’ Rights
A twelve-day training programme for human rights defenders on women’s and girls’ rights was held at frontier district Lalmonirhat. Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) of Lalmonirhat district Md. Rafiqul Islam inaugurated the training programme on 12 July 2020 that continued till 23 September 2020. About 100 human rights defenders including journalists, working for local and national print and electronic media, editors of local newspapers and online news portals, representatives of CSOs and religious leaders participated in the programme. News Network and Udayankar Seba Sangstha (USS) jointly organized the training with support from the European Union. The training was completed in four batches. Each batch consisting 25 participants received a 3-day training. The training emphasised more on improving the professional ability of human defenders to protect women's and girls’ rights. They were also given an understanding of exiting country’s law and policies, and international aw standard to protect women rights and empowerment issues. The country’s reputed human rights and women rights experts including Rekha Saha, Advocate AAM Munir Chowdhury, Nishat Jahan, and Mushfeka Razzaq conducted the training sessions.

Capital Punishment for Rape
Bangladesh President Md Abdul Hamid on October 13, 2020 issued an ordinance on the amendment of Nari O Shishu Nirjaton Daman Ain (Women and Children Repression Prevention Act), incorporating the provision of capital punishment for rape.
The legislative and parliamentary affairs division of the law ministry also issued a gazette notification to this effect yesterday, saying the ordinance is titled as Nai O Shishu Nirjaton Daman Ain (Amendment) Ordinance, 2020. According to the ordinance, "Lifetime Rigorous Imprisonment" mentioned in Section 9(1) of the Act has been replaced by "Death or Lifetime Rigorous Punishment". Read More
