Digital and Physical Safety Training for Journalists held in Khulna, Barishal

News Network, Dhaka, 15 Dec 2020: Two field level training programme on “Digital and Physical Safety of Journalists” were held successfully in two divisional cities, Khulna and Barishal, recently. News Network organised the 2-day field level training programmes with support from the Internews with a view to strengthening the capacity and skills of journalists in the field of digital technologies and physical security.
The training mostly focused on tools, tactics and concepts that facilitate the safe use of digital resources. During the programme the trainees learnt about the digital threats and risks, mitigation strategies and security best practices that can be used to improve a user’s digital hygiene and overall digital security.

As part of the best practices to protect information, news, sources and devices, participants attended the programme learnt how to protect emails and use internet safely, how to protect computer from malware and hackers and how to protect information from physical threats.
The learnings also included what the safe internet websites are, how to remove internet browsing history, what incognito browsing is, anonymity network, effective use of pseudonyms, how to protect identity of email account user, encrypting mails and hard-drive, hiding information with VeraCrypt and creating strong passwords.

Participants, who attended the programme, were overwhelmed for the opportunity to learn and hone the new media skills and stressed the need for more such training to cope with the rising IT security threats.
The participants' perception and knowledge about the digital and physical security status after joining the training program had increased significantly in comparison with the ones before. The average post-test score was much higher than the pre-test score. Fellows enjoyed the training and rated all sessions well on their evaluations.

“ The training was very fantastic and lively. I have learned a lot about the latest information, the up-to-date technology on Digital and Physical Safety of Journalists during the training sessions. I have been able to improve my know-how by being aware of the use of technology and hope to use it with utmost care in future,” said Dipankar Roy, Khulna Correspondent of The Daily Star.
“ It was an excellent programme, my first ever virtual reality training on cyber safety or digital security. The training is completely going to change our idea and way of working by introducing us with a new technology. We learnt a lot about the risks of digital networks and how to mitigate those, evaluate potential risks and ways to reduce risk,” said Rahat Khan, a participant from Barishal who works for Bangladesh Protidin and News 24.
“ It was my first training where I got a hands-on experience using computers, online equipment and materials. Earlier, I knew almost nothing about the digital security. But now I know how to protect emails and use internet safely, how to protect computer from malware and hackers and how to gather information facing the challenges of physical threats”, said Morjina Begum who works for a local daily, Dainik Shokaler Barta, in Barishal.

A total of 46 journalists, representing various national and regional print and electronic media, took part in programmes held in Khulna and Barishal. Among the participants 11 were female journalists.
High district officials inaugurated the programmes held at the divisional headquarters while Internews – Bangladesh Country Representative Mainuddin Ahmed and News Network Editor and CEO Shahiduzzaman distributed certificates among the journalists in both the programmes. Senior journalist Sheikh Didarul Alam and Vorer Alo, Editor Shaifur Rahman coordinated the training programmes at Khulna and Barishal respectively. Internews – Bangladesh Programme Manager Shameem Ara Sheuli, News Network Programme Manager Ziaur Rahman were also present.
